Thumbnail - Discography (1993-2001)

Thumbnail was an emo-hardcore band from Knoxville, Tennessee who were active through most of the 90s, leaving a distinct mark on the DIY hardcore scene. Thumbnail had members of Chino Horde, Generation Of Vipers and New Action Of Four. They released a number of 7"s and three 12" albums while active, many of which were released on File 13 Records.

Thumbnail relied heavily on complex rhythms and melodies to craft their unique mathy sound completed with half-sang-half-screamed vocals. Their earlier work sounded similar to The Crownhate Ruin or Hoover but they moved more into the experimental realm with later music like their album Red Dead featuring some mainly instrumental tracks and a plethora of complex guitar riffs. Thumbnail's driving instrumentals are reminiscent of early Unwound at times with their cyclic rhythms and frantic pacing.

Thumbnail solidified their mark on the hardcore scene touring through the US and releasing killer after killer record. Despite their influential work, Thumbnail remains under the radar of many even within the scene. However, thanks to Numero Group's recent attention to the band they have been gaining more traction with all their work up for streaming on Spotify now. It's great to see them getting the recognition they deserve.

Tears Of Avarel - Discography (1998-2001)

Tears Of Avarel was an experimental deathcore/emoviolence band from New Hampshire. This band was completely over the top and frankly ridiculous in many ways; they were an 8 piece band with two vocalists that had some notorious live shows and ridiculously hard to find releases. I don't know why this band has surged in popularity recently, especially considering how obscure they are and how hard it was to find their material, but they are suddenly a very hot topic, with many witch-hunts being started to try and find physical copies of their scant releases.

Tears Of Avarel had a unique, well meshed sound that incorporated the heavy breakdowns of the myspace metal/deathcore scenes with the impossibly high shrieked vocals of emoviolence bands like Jeromes Dream and Of Death. This kind of sound seems to really bode well with the youth of today, being raised on the heavy metalcore and emoviolence bands that are exploding in popularity recently. It's a bit confusing to see a band like Tears Of Avarel blow up so much but it's a welcome surprise nonetheless.
