Born Against - Discography (1989-1993)

Born Against was a Hardcore band from New York. Where do you start with a band who's reputation precedes them? Born Against was a fit of sardonic rage that challenged the very nature of hardcore punk and helped spark the flame that would burn into the greater 90s D.I.Y punk scene. Along with their contemporaries and friends in Rorschach, Born Against vocally refused to be confined the the violent, backwards ways of the late 80s/ early 90s NYHC scene. The band paved their own way and helped make the legendary ABC No Rio become a safe haven for more experimental (and less violent) punk acts.

Born Against had a malestrom of influences from across the board, it's really hard to describe their sound as it was constantly changing with their line-up, however one facet remained constant; it was pissed off and political to a fault.

The Alex P. Keatons - Demo (1998)

The Alex P. Keatons was a hardcore/punk band from Calgary, Alberta who released one tape in 1998. Unfortunately little is known about this band, but they ripped. You can hear their vast potential on their one and only release; which is full of fast-paced, upbeat rhythms with shrieked vocals that border on screamo. The Alex P. Keatons took obvious influence from regional anarcho-punk bands like Propaghandi and Submission Hold, while still maintaining the "emotional" sound that was popular in Calgary at the time.

Their sole release shows a diverse range of genres meshed into something that really works to create an unforgettable sound. For lack of a better description, their music sounds like 80s hardcore meets 90s hardcore and somehow they join to make something great. Always blows my mind to discover great bands like them from my own city. I feel so lucky a lot of this music has been preserved by amazing resources like the Calgary Cassette Preservation Society and CJSW radio station. Without their efforts, a lot of this music would be lost to time and someone like me would never be able to find it.

Along with Joule and The Corta Vita, The Alex P. Keatons is one of the bands that really got me into Calgary's history with punk music. Being from the city, I never really expected to discover an "emocore" DIY scene within my own home. Albeit long gone now, a lot has changed within the local scene (some for the best some for the worst), but it was very enlightening to discover my own city had something to offer back in the day.

If anyone has any more info about The Alex P. Keatons, don't hesitate to send a message to us! We would be very interested to hear anything and everything about them as well as add it to the blog post!

Welcome The Plague Year - Discography (2003-2005)

Welcome The Plague Year was a hardcore band from Philadelphia who were active in the early oughts and formed by members of Makara, Joshua Fit For Battle and Neil Perry. They released one full-length album, a 7", a split 7" with Funeral Diner, a split 5" with Ampere and a demo CDr.

Combining elements of all members' former bands, Welcome The Plague Year ripped through the early 2000s leaving their mark on the era as one of the best of their time. A touch of the synthy melodic-ness of Funeral Diner with the heaviness of Neil Perry and the sheer chaos of Joshua Fit For Battle, Welcome The Plague year have a sound all their own.

The emo scene in the early oughts was often questionable at best and filled with mediocrity at worst, however, there are a few outliers that really make me want to get more into the era, one of which being Welcome The Plague Year. There was a super chaotic heaviness on the rise through the late 90s and there were definitely some bands of the early 2000s that perfected this, to name another, Love Lost But Not Forgotten. Albeit very different from the 90s emocore scene, it has it's time and place and I've come to respect it just as much. Listening to the shifts in the kind of music being released in the DIY/emo scene through the decades never ceases to amaze me. Though my loyalties will always lie within the 1990-2005 range, each wave of emo bands had their own take on the sound that had been evolving for decades.

With their gut-wrenchingly shrieked vocals and melancholy melodies that shift into brutally heavy riffs within seconds, Welcome The Plague Year is a great place to start if you're new to this music. They balance the hardcore elements with the emo elements almost seamlessly, they have something for everybody.

Cornelius - Discography (1994-1996)

Cornelius was a hardcore band from Wilmigton, North Carolina. Chris Murray, the vocalist, also ran the influential label Assorted Porkchops. The band was a unique product of the North Carolina scene, while also taking heavy influence from bands like Assfactor 4, with a sound that was invigorating, manic and fresh. Much like Assfactor 4, Cornelius played at a blazing fast speed, with strained shrieking vocals while still managing to have a melodic and cohesive sound. The ST 10" is probably my favourite release by them and it displays all the bands best traits to stunning effect. The Terraforming 7" is a little slower and less intense but it has some interesting ideas behind the songs that play out well. Overall, Cornelius is worth the time to check out, especially if you like Assfactor 4!

Unfortunately I have not been able to find any pictures, flyers or live videos of this band, so if you know of any, send them our way!

Incurable Complaint - Discography (1994-1995)

Incurable Complaint was a hardcore band from Santa Barbara, California. The band notably shared members with Embassy and Ochre. Incurable Complaint was heavily influenced by early metalcore bands like Rorschach, while still maintaining essential influences from their native Californian scene. The band's sound balanced stop/start twangy instrumentals, characteristic of California contemporaries like Strictly Ballroom and Embassy, with metallic breakdowns and strained screams. In their short active period, Incurable Complaint released music on the legendary Ebullition records and played shows with countless influential bands. They are an overlooked gem from a very respected scene that deserves a listen!
