Burn On Ice - 7" and Compilation Tracks (1999)

Burn On Ice was an emo/hardcore band from Saint-Étienne, France. The late '90s hardcore scene in Saint-Étienne was incredibly special, yet unfortunately, it remains largely lost to time. Bands like Pedestrian Crossing, Eis, and Burn On Ice are just a few examples that I’ve come across, but they frustratingly have little to no presence online.

The material I’ve collected from Burn On Ice was previously inaccessible before I managed to track down their releases. Despite being active in the late '90s, their sound feels like it’s straight out of 1992. I’d compare them to bands like Manumission, Reach Out, and Finger Print, if I had to choose a few. One fun detail: the band’s sole 7" features a bundle of human hair glued to the front cover. In the spirit of preservation, I considered keeping it intact with my copy, but I just didn’t have the heart (or stomach) to leave it on. Burn On Ice was an excellent band that remains largely unspoken for, and I’d love to hear more from them. Hopefully, their demo and split tapes will surface in the future!

If you have any information, audio, or extra copies of any of the three Burn On Ice cassette tapes, please let us know!

Church Of Astronauts - 7" (1996)

Church Of Astronauts was a hardcore band from Louisville, Kentucky. I'm sure this band has more material but all I have to share is this excellent 7" from 1996. Hailing from the same scene that spawned ambitious projects like Slint and Rodan; The Church Of Astronauts were no exception. The band had a distinctive, idiosyncratic style that could only really be only compared to Virginia's Hose.Got.Cable; despite them being much heavier, with ferocious growled vocals and panicked guitar work. I'd love to hear more from this band, if anyone has any demos, unreleased tracks or compilation tapes featuring Church Of Astronauts, please let us know!

Suiciety - S/T 7" (1993)

Suiciety was a hardcore/sludge band from Fort Worth, Texas who were active from the late 80s to the early 90s. Suiciety released a demo and one self-titled 7" on Repercussion during their time together. Curiously, the S/T 7" has 3 different artwork variations. Suiciety played shows with Indian Summer, Born Against, Sinker and Rorschach.

Suiciety had a similar sound and style to early Ebullition releases like Struggle or Iconoclast; they blended heavy hardcore with a sludge influenced metallic edge. They stand out quite a bit on the Repercussion Records catalog, being the only band that is heavily influenced by metal, but they make an excellent addition in any case.

Suiciety, while admittedly not as groundbreaking or experimental as acts like Indian Summer or Shroomunion, fits in perfectly with the early Repercussion sound. Hopefully one day the demo will surface online again, untill then we are left with these 2 incredible tracks. You can really hear their potential even from the 2 tracks on the 7", so it's a shame the demo is currently lost.

Union Young America - Kill The Man In Everything 7" (1995)

Union Young America was a hardcore band from Guelph Ontario. Despite only releasing one 7", Union Young America was a important band in the Ontario scene; playing shows with bands like Shoulder, Shotmaker and Minnow. The band had a upbeat, driving and infectious sound that mixed elements of pop punk and 80s style "emocore" in a way that was more endearing and less annoying then one might expect.

Nine Days Wonder - Aluminum 7" (1999) and Scenery Is In Disguise Here 12" (2000)

Nine Days Wonder was a Japanese emo / post-hardcore band that formed in 1997 and were active well into the 2000s. They toured with The Exploder, Envy, Elliott and more. They released two albums, a couple EPs and two compilation CDs, however this post will focus on their first two releases.

Nine Days Wonder instantly clicked with me after listening to their 1999 7", Aluminum. They have an incredibly tight and technical sound somewhat similar to the likes of Maximilian Colby or Sleepytime Trio. Aluminum stays to the mathy, hardcore sound while their 2000 12" strays a little from hardcore into a more post-rock realm with a few heavy hitting tracks scattered throughout.

Akira Kawasaki of Nine Days Wonder was also in Mouse On the Keys, an interesting nu-jazz/post-rock project that is also worth checking out.

I'll be using the Spotify links for this post as they are actively copywrited by Dim Mak.
