Ice Nine was a hardcore / powerviolence band from Indianapolis, Indiana who existed for around a year in the mid 90s. Despite their short time active, the band managed to release three 7"s, a split 7" with Charles Bronson, a split 7" with Endive, a split 7" with Gadje and a discography CD after their break up.
Ice Nine is so fast, driving and chaotic it's disorienting. The band drives forward with intense pulsating drum beats, jarringly fast and discombobulated guitar and absolutely raw, shrieked lyrics. Ice Nine truly puts a meaning to the term "powerviolence", listening to their music feels like being immersed in pure anger and chaos.
They stand out to me as one of the best powerviolence bands because they just do it so well. They have a unique sound where a lot of powerviolence just sounds like the next band. You can hear their influence in many bands to come, even into the 2000s, but Ice Nine just really had that passion and purpose that is hard to come by with this music these days in my opinion.
