Funeral Diner was a hardcore band from Half Moon Bay, California who were active from 1998 until disbanding in 2007. The band featured members of Nexus 6, I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism In Your Yearbook, Takaru and most notably perhaps, the drummer of Portraits Of Past.
They released an expansive discography that included; three 12"s, split 12"s with Staircase, The Shivering and Nexus 6, two CD/12"s a split 9" with Ampere, a split 10" with Evylock, split 7"s with Raein, Zann, The Saddest Landscape and Welcome To The Plague Year, two CDrs and two CD compilations.
Funeral Diner, while fitting in with the other "screamo" bands of the late 90s/early 2000s, had quite a unique amalgamation of genres making up their sound. Their style is true to the chaotic, screamy sound of their time, somewhat comparable to Joshua Fit For Battle or The Spirit Of Versailles. That being said Funeral Diner added a touch more of the melodic, grandiose builds of intensity that are commonplace in post-rock. Unlike the "emoviolence" bands of the 90s, Funeral Diner's songs were long and slow to begin with, building to an explosion of chaos in the end.
Their distinct elements of chaos are at least partially attributable to Mathew Bajda, their drummer who was formerly in pioneering "emo" hardcore band, Portraits Of Past. The fast, rhythmic drumming is both chaotic yet calculated and perfectly woven into Funeral Diner's melodic intensity.
Funeral Diner was also known for using synths in some of their songs which seems an odd choice but it has always really worked for me. They aren't the only hardcore band to use synths in their music, it seemed to be somewhat of a trend in the early 2000s. It reminds me at times of the synths used by Tidal, especially in their 10" which was released in 2001, a few years prior to Funeral Diner's The Underdark.
Funeral Diner is one of the most prevalent and notable bands of the 90s hardcore scene, in my opinion. They utilize the stylistic elements of the 90s hardcore bands before them along with new and fresh ideas that would erupt into an entirely new style in the 2000s.
