Computer Science - Showcase
Computer Science is a hardcore/emo band from Montréal, Canada who formed in 2025. They have released one demo and one album which just came out this December. Featuring members of Eric Spinelli and Twine, Computer Science has crafted a nuanced sound that balances eerie soft guitar and spoken parts with heavy hitting breakdowns and shrill screams.
Computer Science channels a mid-90s, very raw, very DIY sound that I absolutely love. To me they are a perfect mixture of heavy and very emotional and sad. You can hear all of the passion and emotion the band put into writing their music, especially their debut full length.
More and more great bands in this genre are popping up in Canada recently and it makes me so happy to see, Computer Science is not one to miss out on! Looking forward to seeing where this band goes and hoping to see them live at some point.

Tetrapodwhy - Showcase
Tetrapodwhy is a new four piece emo band from Calgary, Alberta. They formed sometime in summer of 2024 but only played their first shows late summer 2025. Melding mathy, noodley guitar parts with dissonant half-screamed vocals, Tetrapodwhy is bringing a fresh sound to Calgary. You can certainly tell they spent about a year perfecting their sound and style before releasing music or playing anything live.
Their first EP was released September 23rd, 2025, not long after their impressive first show (aside from a tiny basement set) opening for Chicago-based band Your Arms Are My Cocoon along. The EP is titled "long way from your heart", which features 6 tracks. The EP was released digitally through Luv Bugs Records, Connor of Montréal-based bands Eric Spinelli, Computer Science and Twine's DIY label.
Their EP gives you a taste of what this band is going for and leaves you wanting more. Their mixture of 2010s style indie emo is sprinkled with discordant, twangy riffs and raw vocals that are reminiscent of the 90s DIY emo scene. This makes for a sound that is both approachable to newcomers and enjoyable for long-time fans of the genre alike.
Their show opening for Your Arms Are My Cocoon left me very impressed with how tight and in sync the band sounded with one another. They had good stage presence and a lot of emotion exuded from vocalist Ty Schwarzenberger's strained screams. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this band goes.
Seeing the emo/screamo scene being re-energized in Calgary is so refreshing and exciting to me, we have the beginnings of something really good and I hope that it continues to grow and evolve. Everyone check out Tetrapodwhy!

Twine - Showcase (2023-2025)
Twine is a four piece emo band from Montréal, Quebec who released their first EP in August of 2023, followed by an album September of 2024. They continue to play frequent shows, mainly in Montréal but have played in a few other places such as Toronto. They also opened for current emo band, Your Arms Are My Cocoon. A member of the band also recently started another emo/screamo band called Eric Spinelli who have one EP out released in January of this year and just recently, a three way split with Twine and We Could Go On Tour.
Twine has a haunting, nostalgic tone to their music that hooked me immediately. The mixture of minimal, picked guitar and emotionally driven vocals by Jenna and Connor make for a sound full of texture and feeling. Jenna's soft, beautiful vocals paired with Connor's more abrasive, half-screamed ones make for the perfect balance of emo with a touch of the heavier DIY punk sound.
Twine often plays DIY shows held under bridges or at small punk venues or bars and they definitely are a part of a flourishing and vast punk scene in Montréal right now.
The band members are also talented in the visual art department, between photography, visual/mixed media art and screen printing, the members have it all covered. Their album art, shot not by a member but a members lovely partner Medina, stands out as some of the most unique and creative I've seen in a long time. The art for their full length album uses an interesting technique of sticking a real, dead cicada to the lens of the camera, the focus on the cicada, but visible in the background two people hold each other, twirling in a green field.
Twine is one of my favourite currently active bands and I can't wait to see what else they do and hear more music from them. Everyone check out Twine! They are the coolest.
