Season - Discography (1996-1999)

    Season was a heavy hardcore band from Cean, France. To my knowledge, they are the only French band to adopt the Canadian "emo-crust" sound, which Europeans often refer to as "north-core"—a style that gained immense popularity in Germany. If you’re a fan of bands like ACME, Uranus, Arsen, One Eyed God Prophecy, and His Hero Is Gone, do yourself a favor and check out this band's sole 7". Season is just as crushingly heavy as those bands and deserves more recognition than they currently receive. Their 7" is undoubtedly one of my favorite late '90s Stonehenge releases and easily secures a spot on the influential label's roster.

Burn On Ice - 7" and Compilation Tracks (1999)

    Burn On Ice was an emo/hardcore band from Saint-Étienne, France. The late '90s hardcore scene in Saint-Étienne was incredibly special, yet unfortunately, it remains largely lost to time. Bands like Pedestrian Crossing, Eis, and Burn On Ice are just a few examples that I’ve come across, but they frustratingly have little to no presence online.

    The material I’ve collected from Burn On Ice was previously inaccessible before I managed to track down their releases. Despite being active in the late '90s, their sound feels like it’s straight out of 1992. I’d compare them to bands like Manumission, Reach Out, and Finger Print, if I had to choose a few. One fun detail: the band’s sole 7" features a bundle of human hair glued to the front cover. In the spirit of preservation, I considered keeping it intact with my copy, but I just didn’t have the heart (or stomach) to leave it on. Burn On Ice was an excellent band that remains largely unspoken for, and I’d love to hear more from them. Hopefully, their demo and split tapes will surface in the future!

Summer Day In June - Discography (1994-2000)

    Summer Day In June was a hardcore band from Auch, France who were active through most of the 90s. Members were also in a multitude of French grindcore bands such as Tennis Bastard, Tekken and Los Suppozitos. Despite their many active years, Summer Day In June only released one CD, one 7" and one demo and appeared on a few compilations. 

    Summer Day In June had a sound that evolved throughout their releases, but remained consistently under the influence of emotional hardcore. Their CD leans more toward that intense "emocore" sound with shrill, painstaking vocals whereas their 7" had a more fast-paced punky sound to it. Their demo recording is very rough and featured a drum machine. 

    Despite most of my favourite hardcore bands being from France, the plethora of great French bands seemed to drop off after the mid-90s, or at least my knowledge of good bands ends there. I found Summer Day In June's 7" at a store in Vancouver and realizing it was French I had high hopes for it, which they really lived up to. 

    Though they have a vastly different sound from the early 90s French scene (ie. Anomie, Weep, Undone etc), Summer Day In June continued to hold up France's reputation for mind-blowingly good hardcore. Perhaps because less noteworthy bands were around in the early 2000s when they released their recordings, Summer Day In June remains buried below the surface. If you like French hardcore or really any emotionally driven hardcore you should definitely check these guys out.

Sea Shepherd - Discography (1993-1994)

    

    Sea Shepherd was a hardcore band from Orléans, France who were active in the early 90s. The band featured members of Autonomia Indigena and Shatter The Myth. During their active period they released a 7", a split 7" with Rabia (Autonomia Indigena's prior name), and a demo tape as well as appearing on various compilations.

    France in the 90s produced so many great bands, and Sea Shepherd is no exception. With heavy hitting screamed vocals and a mix of slow instrumentals and fast, thrashy parts Sea Shepherd brought their own sound to the scene. They're not quite as emotional sounding as bands like Weep or Finger Print, they lie more along the lines of Ivich but a touch heavier and minus the horns. 

    Though they were involved with the "emotional" hardcore scene, Sea Shepherd channels a classic hardcore punk sound with heavily political messaging I would compare to Ebullition bands like Los Crudos or Struggle. I love the packaging and booklet that accompanies their 7" release including lyrics (in both french and english), art and various political sentiments.
