Cult Of Eugene was an emocore band from somewhere in California. Not much is known about this band other than the fact that they had a demo, a 7" and played frequently with other influential bands of the period such as Evergreen, Still Life, Nuzzle, Emery and Ribbon Fix. I was lucky enough to find the demo on the dummer John Kinses' reverbnation website. At least I think it is the demo, it seems some track names have been switched around. Cult Of Eugene had an excellent indie/emo sound that mirrored the work of their peers in Evergreen and Nuzzle, with reverb drenched guitars and sappy vocals. While the demo is a bit more rough and punk leaning, the 7" is a perfect expression of the downcast and esoteric 90s emo sound. The fact that bands like Cult Of Eugene exist, on the precipice of becoming completely forgotten despite their talent and connections is a testament for the importance of the archiving and sharing their work.
I will be on the lookout for a copy of the 7" in the future but for now the only existing digital version of it is quite lo-fi. Hopefully the quality can be improved at some point later on. Enjoy this little lost piece of emo history!
