Yaphet Kotto - Discography (1996-2005)

Yaphet Kotto was a politically driven hardcore band from Santa Cruz, California who were active from 1996-2005. Members of the band were also in The Anasazi, Look Back And Laugh, Makara, Jenny Piccolo, Encyclopedia Of American Traitors, Science Of Yabra, Bread & Circuits and A Light In The Attic.

Yaphet Kotto released three 12"/CDs, a three way split CD with Envy and This Machine Kills, two 7"s, a split 7" with Suicide Nation, a live 12" and a CD of unreleased tracks.

Yaphet Kotto was one of those quintessential Ebullition emo/hardcore bands that you can't be into this genre without knowing. Lyrically they were very political and their releases were filled with radical literature and artwork. In terms of sound they vary between very soft, melancholic parts and much louder, heavier parts with screamed vocals almost in the tune of Indian Summer. Their balance of "emo" and hardcore is really on the nose but works together seamlessly to give a sound that is both angry and passionate and melancholic and sad.

The members of Yaphet Kotto were obviously very talented and all went on to play in other bands of similar genres. Yaphet Kotto has sound that differs from a lot of the members other work though. They just had that very distinct "emo" feel to them that made them stand out as one of the most well known. You'd be hard pressed to find any list of influential emo bands without Yaphet Kotto.
