The Leadfoot Broadcast - Demo (1996)

The Leadfoot Broadcast was a emo-hardcore band from Southern California. Despite being somewhat of a California supergroup, The Leadfoot Broadcast is hardly documented and rarely mentioned overall. The band featured the former Indian Summer/Sinker drummer Dan Bradley as well as Patricia Kavanaugh, the future vocalist of Blackjackaction and Brian Gathy of Amber Inn, The Shivering and Ribbon Fix fame.

The Leadfoot Broadcast had that quintessential mid-’90s emocore sound that would’ve fit right in on Repercussion Records. Their songs were rough, impassioned, original and driven by that classic stop-start, loud-quiet dynamic. It’s easy to hear parallels with the bands mentioned above, as well as their scene-mates Lumber. Even with just 12 minutes of material on this four-song demo, The Leadfoot Broadcast managed to carve out a distinct identity and secured a place alongside their peers in the California scene.

The Suicide Boys - Discography (2002-2005)

The Suicide Boys was a screamo band from Calgary, Alberta. I’ll start by acknowledging that some parts of the band’s outward appearance haven’t aged especially well, including the name, along with a handful of edgy song titles that where customary at the time. Sound-wise, TSB played a rough-around-the-edges, jagged mix of loud-quiet screamo and metallic hardcore, pulling clear influence from bands like Converge and Coalesce, with some grittier, crust-leaning influences thrown in the mix. The recordings are pretty damn raw; chaotic tempo shifts, puke-your-guts-out vocals and a bit more heart than polish. I think I prefer the EP tracks to the LP, they have some more going on and the band sounds a lot tighter. While TSB honestly might not be my personal favourite band from the Calgary scene, I still think they are worth putting out there and they have some pretty good moments on their releases.

I’m close to tracking down one of their CDs and will update this post with a proper rip and scans sooner than later. If anyone has live video of the band, feel free to reach out, i'd love to share it!

Lachance - Discography (1999-2005)

Lachance was a screamo band from Rancho Cucamonga, California. One of the more creative bands to come out in the 00s, Lachance was unfortunately buried under a slew of mediocore bands in the oversaturated 00s scene and left to obscurity. Lachance had an extremely tense and discordant sound with some insane shrieks and boy, did these guys know how to shred. I honestly haven't heard another screamo band that really emulates the sound Lachance was going for and they had a lot of technical proficiency that is sometimes lacking in screamo releases. Overall they are a thrilling and worthwhile listen, especially that self titled 10".

If you have any live videos or posters featuring Lachance, please send them my way!

Five-O - Discography (1992-1995)

Five-O was an emo-hardcore band from Little Rock, Arkansas. The band was a staple of File 13 Records and released a scant few 7"s and demo tapes in the early ’90s. I came across them when I first started raiding the 7" stacks here in Calgary at Sloth Records, where I found their 1993 7". Those early emo-hardcore records I picked up were incredibly important to me and ultimately led to the start of the Canadianwasteland project. Hardcore, particularly its more political and emotional side, has made a lasting and profound impact on how I view the world. The lyrics, inserts and writings, and the raw, idealistic perspective they reflected, have continued to motivate me to be a better person and make the world around me a better place to live in. These kids knew what was really important at the end of the day, your friends and your community.

There is a significant amount of material like this that is at risk of disappearing over time. I really think more people should consider starting their own projects to help compile and preserve what they can; many hands make light work. Efforts like these can help ensure that these records and literature of innate importance are not lost. My deepest thanks and eternal gratitude to Tenzin Tsagong for digitizing the Five-O demos and contributing heavily to the community with his continued good work.

Five-O was part of the diverse Arkansas scene, which spanned bands like Everyone Asked About You all the way to Econochrist. Five-O's sound ranged from melodic to frenetic, with vocals shifting between sing-screaming and straight up heavy screaming. The rhythm section stands out as well, with downright impressive bass playing and drums locked tightly in tow. Overall Five-O is a band worth checking out and preserving! Please let me know if you have any flyers or live videos I can add to this post.

Lewistown - Discography (1996-1999)

Lewistown was an emo-core band from Richmond, Virginia. Rarely mentioned outside of their native scene, Lewistown remains one of those hidden gem bands worth seeking out for anyone that is deeply into emocore. The band released music on Bug Records, which put out a handful of solid records before eventually shuttering. Lewistown bolstered a disheveled-yet-melodic heavy sound, marked by some brain-tingling drumming, mid-tempo heavy guitars, groovy bass lines, and throat shredding growls.

I am still missing Lewistown's compilation tracks and will update this post if I can find them in the future!
