Chupacabra - Discography (1998-2001)

For CanadianWasteland's 200th post, I thought it would be fitting to do a band from our hometown. Chupacabra was a grindcore/ anarcho-crust band from Calgary, Alberta; who were active in the late 90s. Not to be confused with a multitude of other artists with the same name or some variant of it; Chupacabra is a standout band from the 90s D.I.Y hardcore scene in Calgary. In their active years they released a demo tape, a 7", a split 7" with Moral Hazard, and a full length CD.

Chupacabra played fast, heavy and violent grindcore tinged crust with some of the greatest dual male/female vocals I've ever heard. Almost everyone I know in the Calgary punk scene (who's old enough to remember them) raves about Chupacabra. It's still crazy to me that a band this accomplished is from my hometown (although we also have The Corta Vita and Joule among many others). Shira's intensely raw and shrill vocals alongside Andy's husky and brutal growls create a perfect synergy, amidst the chaotic His Hero Is Hone-esque instrumentals and impossibly fast drums.

Watching the footage available of Chupacabra, it's very evident that the band had a lot of passion for what they were doing. In the article I linked below, Shira talks about how the punk community meant a lot to her, and that's evident in their music, you can feel how much they cared. Chupacabra; especially Shira, will always be a big inspiration to me as an aspiring vocalist myself and as a woman in the punk scene.

Needless to say, Chupacabra is definitely worth checking out! There seems to be quite a few copies of their 7"s floating around Calgary, so if you're in Calgary and find a copy I'd highly recommend it. (Tip: we have one at Hot Wax right now). Lastly, if anyone reading this has any more info, photos, footage etc. on the band please let me know!
