Choke To Start - Discography (1995-1996)

Choke To Start was a post-hardcore band from Kitchener, Ontario. Like contemporaries Gaffer, Choke To Start had a varied sound that ranged from math rock and post rock to post-hardcore. I could compare them in some ways to bands like Rodan and Hoover. Despite only being active for a few years in the mid 90s, Choke To Start had undeniable chemistry and produced some complex and intriguing tracks. As a whole, the Ontario post-hardcore scene in the 90s was quite developed and yet, very underrated in the scope of things, I think Choke To Start might just be the most overlooked band of the bunch.

Big thanks to Gabe for sharing the unreleased album, live set and demo, which were previously quite hard to find!

The Forty-Two - Discography (1995-1997)

The Forty-Two was a post-hardcore band from Atlanta, Georgia. Two members later went on to form Aslund Constant and the guitarist also went on to play drums for Atlanta contemporaries Barrel. The Forty-Two was a band that kind of defies definition; in some ways you could compare them to the jazzy-emo of Seraphim, or the jagged dissonance of Jazz Man's Needle, or the stop-start pondering of Singlefileline, but the band really has their own unique sound. The drumming on these tracks is a high point for me, if you watch the live video below their drummer has quite the weird set up that he utilizes incredibly effectively. For a band of their tenure, The Forty-Two put out some tight knit and well-composed songs that are real fun, rumpshakin' ear-worms to say the least.

(Despite the title, this is The Forty-Two not Wheeljack)

In Vain - Discography (1995-1997)

In Vain was a hardcore band from Wolcott, Connecticut. The band shared members with 100 Demons and appeared on a split 7" with the influential Piebald. In Vain had a youthful and energetic sound that teetered on the precipice between melodic and heavy, they really remind me at times of Frail; leaning into the more traditional aspects of hardcore while adding in a splash of that "emo" sound. I first encountered this band when I picked up the 4-way compilation 7" they featured on, this was about 3 years ago and I unfortunately wrote off the band as being not very interesting from that first listen. This summer I came across a copy of the ST 7" in Montreal and decided to give the band another spin. I was rewarded this time around as In Vain had some really refreshingly unique compositions. I'm finding myself listening to them more and more each time I revisit them and I highly suggest checking them out if you haven't heard of them before!

Resin - Discography (1993-2001)

Resin was a grindcore/ hardcore band from Rapid City, South Dakota. Much like the rockin' In/Humanity, Resin was a band hellbent on being as obnoxious, over the top and in your face as possible; albiet with a blistering grindcore twist. Many an emo kid must have been befuddled by Resin's 14 track-17 minute masterpiece "Mutilating Emo Wussies Since The Dawn of Rock & Roll" populating the B-side of their Still Life split 12" back in the day. Anyways, to start, Resin was reportedly one of the craziest live performances to see during the 90s, despite only pumping out a few lo-fi recording sessions over their 8 year active period. Resin toured consistently and claimed notoriety for themselves through a rash of manic and intense shows. Whats left behind of their legacy is a collection of down and dirty hardcore tracks that should be consumed with great care, lest you fall victim to the madness yourself...
