Lustre King - The Money Shot (1997)

Lustre King was a math rock trio from Chicago, Illinois active from 1996 to 1999. Their songs are largely instrumental but have some vocals here and there mixed among the complex guitar riffs. They released one album on CD, an EP 12"/CD, a 7" as well as a split 7" with The Five Deadly Venoms. They also appeared on a number of compilations.

Vocalist/bassist Craig Akerman played in post-rock band Abilene (with ex-Hoover/Regulator Watts and ex-Crownhate Ruin/June of 44 members) as well as in Gainer (with a member of Punjab).

I picked up Lustre King's 12" EP "The Money Shot" on a whim and was immediately impressed with their incredibly tight, intricate sound. Their instrumentals sound like a mix of Slint and the more chaotic sound of Clikatat Ikatowi and their noisy distorted vocals, though used sparingly, really add to the intensity. I find math rock can be hit or miss for me but this one really hit the mark right away, they have a very distinct sound that doesn't wait to grow on you slowly, but rather immediately captures your attention.
