Maximillian Colby was an emotional hardcore band from Harrisonburg, Virginia who were active in the early 1990s. They released a demo, a self-titled 7", a split 7" with Rye Coalition, a split 12" with Shotmaker, and a discography CD during their time as a band. Their rein sadly ended abruptly after their bassist, Bob Baynor passed away. Baynor was beaten badly by police for riding a stolen bicycle and he later passed away in prison due to a spinal infection. Members David NeSmith and Drew Ringo went on to form Sleepytime Trio after the split of Maximillian Colby.
Maximillian Colby was absolutely incredible at what they did, they had everything down to a science. Instrumentals so complex and intricate that they almost sound a bit math rock-ey, vocals a perfect combination of high pitched screams and quieter more post-hardcore sounding parts. Their songs are so tightly woven its hard to notice everything about them on the first listen, as you listen again and again you notice more details that really prove how great they were. Some punk bands sound a little messy and all over the place but who cares right? It's punk music. Maximillian Colby however is on the complete opposite side of the spectrum with everything perfectly planned out and executed right down to the last guitar chord.
Jagged, brash but incredibly clean, Maximillian Colby was one of the best at what they did, they left a lasting impression on the hardcore scene and influenced many bands to come. You can hear some of this in Sleepytime Trio as well, who have a different sound overall but are not lacking in the perfect execution heard in Maximillian Colby.
Maximillian Colby got the inspiration for lyrics of "Sifelaver" from Ian MacKaye who somewhat infamously told them after a show that "You guys are pretty good but you need some wheels that roll."
