Three Penny Opera - Discography (1997-1999)

Three Penny Opera was a hardcore band from Ottawa, Ontario. Rising from the massive pile of ashes that Shotmaker had left before them; Three Penny Opera emerged as a more laid back, yet still biting and political hardcore band that lived up to Shotmaker's legacy. In their active period the band released two albums and one 7" of excellent, grooving post-hardcore. Some of the former members of TPO (and Okara) went on to form the incredibly underrated post-rock band Slow Parker. Their drummer would go on to form the band Metz.

Three Penny Opera utilized Matt Deline's distinctive vocal and guitar style to create a sound that was in both parts a worthy spiritual successor to Shotmaker's legacy and a completely new and refreshing post-hardcore sound with boundless energy and more than catchy hooks. The band traded intensity for a more relaxed and palpable sound that immediately catches the listeners attention and is sure to be stuck in the back of your head for years to come.

Despite their relatively short discography, Three Penny Opera proved that even in the late 90s, there was still room for post-hardcore to grow. These days it (sadly) seems like recognition of Three Penny Opera is mostly a regional phenomena, but they are seriously one of the best and most accessible post-hardcore bands of the 90s. If you are a fan of Shotmaker, Okara, The Grey, 30 Second Motion Picture or post-hardcore in general I would highly recommend giving this band a listen, as it won't take long for them to catch on!
