Rachel - Discography (1996-1997)

Rachel was an emotional hardcore band from Niort, France who were active in the late 90s. Members of the band were also in French hardcore bands Peu Être, Carther Matha and Alcatraz. Rachel's discography includes a demo tape, a three-way split CD with Peu Être and Carther Matha, and a 7". They also appeared on one compilation cassette.

Despite their small discography, Rachel was a staple of the French hardcore scene in the 90s. They sound somewhat similar to the bands of which they share members with, but still stand out and have their own sound. I would describe Rachel, Peu Être, Carther Matha and Alcatraz as different branches of the same tree. They all share attributes and members and have that distinct French "emo" sound but they all differ from each other into their own styles as well. I love Rachel's perfect mix of soft spoken/sung vocals and abrasive, raw screams paired with melancholy guitar riffs. I wish Rachel had a bigger discography because I'd love to hear more from them.

The French hardcore scene in the 90s is just a rabbit hole filled with incredible bands. So many of them are linked in some way or another, either sharing members or at least playing shows together. If you haven't explored this branch of hardcore yet I would highly recommend doing so. I think some of the best hardcore of the decade came out of France.
