Downcast was a new school hardcore band from Goleta, California who existed for a few brief years in the early 90s but had a lasting impact on the DIY hardcore scene throughout the rest of the decade. Their S/T 7" was the first release on the now infamous label, Ebullition Records, which would go on to release work from Spitboy, Funeral Diner, Los Crudos, Portraits Of Past and Iconoclast along with many others. During their brief time as a band, Downcast released a demo tape, a self-titled 7", a self-titled 12", a few comp songs and then a reunion album in 2020.
Downcast was one of most influential bands in creating the sound that is now called "emo", and are credited for contributing to the evolution of hardcore in the 90s. Downcast could be compared to emo pioneers such as Rites Of Spring, Embrace and Swing Kids but they still have their own unique sound. Mixing straightforward heavy hardcore with slightly softer vocals similar to The Hated at times, they really stand out. Their politically charged lyrics and booklets full of the band members' angry rants are some of the most powerful I've seen.
