Navio Forge - As We Quietly Burn A Hole Into... 12" (1993)

Navio Forge was a short-lived, yet influential post-hardcore band from California. The band only ever released one 12" and played two shows in 1993 before splitting up. All of the members were also in other bands around the same time. Sean Linwood was in Admiral, Aaron Arroyo was in Fuel and Sarah Kirsch was in countless other bands including Bread And Circuits, John Henry West, Sawhorse and Torches To Rome.

Despite Navio Forge's brief existence and discography; they left a mark on the 1990s hardcore scene that would last the rest of the decade. They're comparable to other bands of the scene, yet they stand out for having a unique sound that isn't quite like anything else I've heard. They don't sound like Merel or Native Nod but they broke new ground in the same way, they were really doing their own thing instead of following trends. Navio Forge uses elements of hardcore and "emo" that were gaining popularity at the time but throw in their own twist on it, making them not quite fit in with any one style.

The band was also very much ahead of its time, their 12" sounds more like it could have been released in the late 90s than in 1993 when this style of hardcore was just beginning to gain popularity. Navio Forge somehow nailed that emo/hardcore sound before it was even called that. Their 12" is unfortunately fairly hard to come across and a bit pricey when it does surface online but we are lucky enough to have found a nice copy.
